City offers lifeline for the most vulnerable

A Birmingham Labour councillor has voiced her concerns on the rising numbers of meal vouchers being issued. Sharon Thompson, the councillor Birmingham Edgbaston said “It is noticeable and worrying that the number of vouchers we are providing has increased as the effects of the pandemic continue hit families incredibly hard.”

This comes a week after Birmingham City Council has announced that they will be issuing meal vouchers for supermarkets at the value of £15, to 6,000 children during the October half-term.

In addition to this, it comes only weeks after the government has announced that they will be ending the £20 universal credit uplift and announced that national insurance will also be increasing. Questions are being raised as to whether this scheme will be continuing for the remainder of the academic year, as it is a lifeline for many people who are currently struggling.
